Beyfortus was approved and recommended in 2023 by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to be given to infants born during or entering their first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season as well as children up to 24 months of age who remain at risk of severe RSV disease through their second RSV season. Beyfortus is not a vaccine. Beyfortus is a monoclonal antibody. Monoclonal antibody treatments provide pre-made antibodies that can immediately protect against RSV infection.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also recommends Beyfortus be given to all infants < 8 months of age born during or entering their first RSV season if the infant’s mother did not receive Abrysvo during pregnancy, if the mother’s Abrysvo vaccination status is unknown or if the infant was born <14 days after the mother received Abrysvo.
Infants born between April 1 and October 31 should receive a dose of Beyfortus at a well visit in October or November. Offices should work proactively to make sure that all patients born between April 1 and October 31 receive Beyfortus at a well-baby visit sometime in October or November. Beyfortus can be given with other immunizations recommended at the patient’s well-baby visits.
Infants born during RSV season (November 1 – March 31) should receive a dose of Beyfortus either in the hospital prior to discharge or at the first well baby visit in the pediatrician’s office.
Providers may adjust the timing of Beyfortus administration based on guidance from public health authorities or regional medical centers, depending on the geographical variation in the RSV season.
